Crooked, spaced-out, and otherwise misaligned teeth don’t just take a toll on the look of your child’s smile; they take a toll on the function as well. Plus, malocclusion can increase their chances of developing oral health concerns, like cavities. But can your child get braces with baby teeth? Keep reading to learn the answer!

So, Can My Child Get Braces with Baby Teeth?

Yes! Your child can get braces with baby teeth. In fact, there is a specific type of orthodontic treatment for children who still have their primary teeth: Phase 1 Orthodontics. Most often, this smile-enhancing and bite-correcting treatment is used to address:

  • Crooked or protruding teeth
  • Spaced-out or gapped teeth
  • Poor dental habits, like thumb-sucking
  • A disproportionate jaw

If you notice any of these, then it’s a good idea to get in touch with your child’s orthodontist to discuss their treatment options. Otherwise, you should schedule an appointment around their 7th birthday. That way, issues like these can be addressed early on while simultaneously preventing other problems (like overcrowding) from developing.

How Does Phase 1 Orthodontics Work?

While Phase 1 Orthodontics isn’t necessary for every child, it does help many children enjoy an improved bite, better speaking patterns, and an even more beautiful smile. The process starts with a comprehensive consultation. At this point, their orthodontist will conduct a visual exam and take a few X-rays to get a better idea of the position of your child’s teeth and jaw. If Phase 1 Orthodontics is an ideal solution, then they’ll put together a custom treatment plan designed to improve their alignment. After completing this phase of treatment, there will be a rest period for about 12 months before they move on to Phase 2 Orthodontics.

What Are the Benefits of Phase 1 Orthodontics?

Phase 1 Orthodontics provides children with numerous benefits, including that it:

  • Improves breathing
  • Enhances speech
  • Improves chewing habits
  • Creates space for adult teeth to erupt
  • Prevents orthodontic issues (like overcrowding) from developing

If your child is struggling with misaligned teeth or an uneven bite, it’s important to know that you don’t have to wait for all of their adult teeth to emerge before scheduling an appointment with an orthodontist. In fact, there are several benefits to reaching out much sooner, typically around age seven!
